Bringing home a micro piglet is an exciting and unique experience—one that comes with plenty of joy, snuggles, and some very real responsibilities. These pint-sized pigs are intelligent, affectionate, and surprisingly clean animals, but they’re also unlike any other pet you’ve ever had. Whether you’re a first-time pig parent or adding a new friend to your growing farm family, here’s what you need to know before your piglet steps through the door.
First things first: the term “micro pig” can be a bit misleading. While piglets are tiny when you bring them home—often under 10 pounds—they don’t stay that way. Our micro pigs (also called mini pigs, teacup pigs) will grow to weigh anywhere from 50 to 65 pounds as adults, depending on genetics and diet. It’s crucial to understand this before committing, so you’re prepared for a pet that may be closer in size to a medium dog.
Before your piglet arrives, you’ll want to create a safe, comfortable environment for them to settle into. Start with:
Outdoor time is important too, so consider a fenced yard with shaded areas where your piglet can root and play safely. If you are worried about them rooting your landscaped yard, consider building them an area that is just their own to enjoy. Dog runs work well for this purpose.
Here’s your piglet prep checklist:
Micro pigs are incredibly smart—on par with dogs and toddlers—so they respond well to training. But they can also be headstrong. Start simple: litter box training, basic commands (like “come” or “leave it”), and establishing clear boundaries. Use positive reinforcement and treats (veggies work great) to encourage good behavior.
Like dogs, pigs thrive on routine. Try to feed, walk, and play with them at consistent times each day to help them feel secure.
Pigs are social creatures that crave companionship. If you’re away from home often, consider adopting a second piglet, or making sure your pig has a trusted companion—human or otherwise—throughout the day. Regular interaction, snuggles, and playtime are essential to their mental health.
Find a vet who specializes in or is comfortable treating pigs—ideally before your piglet comes home. Your pig will need:
Also be aware of your local zoning laws and ordinances—some areas don’t allow pigs as pets, even tiny ones.
Micro piglets are adorable, but they’re also sensitive, emotional, and sometimes a little dramatic. They may squeal loudly when handled at first, or be nervous in new settings. Be gentle, patient, and give them time to trust you.
In return, you’ll gain an incredibly loving, quirky companion who’ll follow you around, cuddle on the couch, and bring more smiles to your life than you imagined.
